Skin Cancer Screening.

From Left: Screener – Carol Barnes, Driver/Admin officer, Peter Rawlins, Screeners Donna-Marie Hayes and Mark Endersby.

Lions Club of Tumby Bay & Districts in association with the Lions Medical Research Foundation opened the doors of the mobile skin cancer screening clinic in Tumby Bay over the weekend of 14 & 15th February 2026.

With all available appointments filled, the certified screeners saw 131 clients over the two days. Each person was fully screeded in a 15-minute consultation.

The screening team of three noted with some concern that there was a referral rate of 32% of people referred for further consultation with their chosen general practice doctor.

Over the two days, Saturday and Sunday 57 men and 74 women were screened, of which 44 people had never been screened.

Ever day 6 Australian die from the results of skin cancer with two out of every three people will be diagnosed with skin cancer during their lives.

The mobile clinic was in Tumby Bay in 2023 when  a similar number if screenings were conducted.

The Lions Medical Foundation’s mobile clinic is on the road around South Australia throughout the year with the next clinics scheduled for Port Lincoln in the near future.

Lions Club of Tumby Bay & District organisers paid special tribute to the Lions club member who ferried the ten tonne, 19 metre trailer plus truck from Adelaide to Tumby Bay, then worked as the admin officer to keep the paperwork in order.

“The community owes an enormous vote of thanks to the three screening consultants who, all as Lions volunteers gave their time to travel from Adelaide and interstate to deliver this indispensable skin cancer screening check-up”.

“There are considerable costs involved in delivering this screening service, those costs being borne by the Lions Foundation and the Lions Club of Tumby Bay. We are grateful of the donations from clients who undertook the screening that amounted to around $865.00 that will support future delivery of screening clinics in South Australia”.

“We know that there were many disappointed people who were not able to avail themselves of this screening and representations are being made to Lions Medical Foundation to see what options may be available for the future”.

” The response absolutely took us by surprise. All the available appointments were filled within 3 hours of the phone lines being opened”.
